Local residents and business men Brent McCabe and Chuck Cohen of Agoura Hills recently got back from Rosarito Beach with an encouraging message for all who want to know if it is safe to
go to Mexico. YES, it is safe to travel into Baja, Rosarito for tourists.
Mr. McCabe and Cohen are frequent visitors to The Baja area. Their latest trip entailed a private meeting with the Mayor of Rosarito, Mr. Hugo Torres Chabert.
With all the negative publicity surrounding travel into Mexico due to the rash of killings amongst Drug cartel; “We really wanted to know if it is safe to go there...” stated Mr. McCabe. So who
better to ask then the Mayor of Rosarito?
Mayor Torres has taken steps to ensure the safety of visitors and residents by enlisting the help of federal and state police. He is responsible for revamping the entire police force, including
various programs which have promoted safety for residents and tourists alike. The addition of new police, the firing of questionable corrupt officers, along with neighborhood watch programs
to name a few. Newly formed tourist police are visible in short sleeved Grey polo shirts along the main streets of Rosarito who drive around in marked cars. U.S. visitors who commit infractions such as speeding, running a red light, parking violations, now receive tickets printed in English and Spanish. The city allows drivers to pay fines by mail to a U.S. postal box rather than the police officer. Additional programs include drug relations, education for families with children involved with drugs, all having made a huge impact ensuring that it is very safe to go
into Baja as a tourist..
Tourists have never been a target says Mayor Torres. Yes, there is a drug war amongst two rival factions throughout the country he told Cohen and McCabe. Nonetheless the press has not reported accurately or honestly The Mayor added.
A public relations class from Boston’s prestigious Emerson College for the second year is focusing on conveying an accurate picture of this tourist city and dispelling misleading U.S. media reports. Despite what some media reports have indicated, regular residents and visitors to Baja California are not targets.
Rosarito is a wonderful weekend getaway with all its shops, restaurants, hotels curios and wonderful people. Check the facts about the same “news” being recycled over and over keeping things in
perspective for fair and balanced reporting. As for McCabe and Cohen “we will continue to enjoy life below the border. We know the truth.
Brent Mccabe is owner with his partner Mac Cayne of mc2 Wholsale Lighting and Electric Supply here in Westlake village along with Chuck Cohen.
