Wed Sept. 9...
Surrounded by hundreds of people, TV and press, Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos and Playas de Tijuana Delegate Manuel Reyes, planted the first tree that will be part of a city wide highway beautification program. This event marked the beginning of the project, which will plant over 1000 trees along Tijuana’s newly re-surfaced major roads.
Marco Sarabia, Chief Secretary of Tijuana Urban Development told the Baja Times: “The tree planting will extend to about 140 miles along the newly paved roads.” Sarabia also said that the most of the construction being done along the international road going to the border will be complete in about 30 days. “We will put up a sign,” Sarabia added,” that will tell motorists how many days are left until the project is complete. These new Tijuana roads are being paved with the same type of concrete used in the United States. This will last for 30 years: no more big holes!”
The two city representatives greeted helpers and supporters from a number of local groups at the event. About 100 Tijuana Yellow Taxi drivers, all wearing yellow t-shirts, joined students from the Tijuana Technical University, Cecyte, the Playas de Tijuana Citizens Committee, the Playas de Tijuana Beautification Committee, and Project Verde, (Green Project). Cemex, the concrete people, were also along to help start the tree planting project.
Fidel Martinez, Tijuana’s sub-secretary of Urban Development told the Baja Times “this is a very good action for the urban image of the city.”
We can’t help but agree!
